Catherine Cazau

Catherine Cazau was born in Drôme, where she still lives and works today. Her key words are texture and colour. Her paintings are poetic, as they tend to explore human consciousness.

One should not look for meaning or figurative subjects in them, except that of spirituality.

Indeed, Catherine Cazau, speaking of her painting, says: ‘Informal marks, engraved lines, nervous gestures, (almost) illegible inscriptions. My painting is an emotional space, full of energy, retaining a part of secrecy like an enigmatic poem that questions our perception of reality, the chaos of the world.’

Poems and writing in general accompany her works and are closely linked to the artist’s work. Catherine Cazau works on her paintings in the same way that writers work on their texts, retouching the material to change its meaning.

However, Catherine Cazau’s work remains highly technical. According to Jean-Paul Gavart Perret, “The work becomes an original optical phenomenon. It often appears without it being possible to isolate or identify its body, its substance, its texture. It reveals a reality that predates consciousness. ”

The artist plays with the volume of her canvases, exploring different techniques such as collage and imprints. This brings her works to life. The eye wanders from top to bottom or from left to right. The light takes on its full power and plays with the works depending on how they are displayed.
