Exhibition from October 7 to November 5, 2022

For Elisabeth Stenne’s first solo exhibition in four years, Galerie Durst celebrates an entirely new body of work by the artist, brought together through some twenty pieces. The exhibition, entitled “Vibrations”, will be devoted to Elisabeth Stenne’s most recent creations, made specially for this event. Her works oscillate between abstraction and subtle figuration. Light and colour remain the constant thread running through her pictorial exploration.

Elisabeth Stenne is a wide-ranging artist. Coming from a classical background, where she first painted figurative works, notably in acrylic or oil pastel, she broke free to move towards an abstract style and a mastery of oil painting. A consummate technician, her work is characterised by a bold use of colour, deep, vivid, or conversely pastel hues. From burning red to pure white, these colours are the expression of distant memories or fleeting emotions, such as a mood or a vibration.

Nature is often at the origin of her inspiration. By sensing it, she employs a process of simplification to grasp reality and arrive at dreamlike, abstract landscapes. It is within this context that she works with thick, deconstructed layers of material, while at the same time playing with the transparency of others through the use of glazing. Her painting is a means of exploring new worlds, through which the viewer is invited to travel.

Elisabeth Stenne refuses to intellectualise her art. For her, painting is a medium of freedom through which she wanders according to her desires and her sensibility. She invites us to travel and immerse ourselves in her works, allowing emotions to rise to the surface. This is why she has never wished to choose between figurative and abstract painting. She lets herself be guided by the moment, in one direction or another. It is for the viewer to interpret what they see.
