Giovanni Gorini

Born in Lajatico (Pisa) in 1950, he began painting in 1970.

In 1972, he attended the Art Institute, and during this period, the works of Pollock and gestural art influenced him, leading to his first “abstract” painting in 1974.

Until 1975, he deepened this phase of research to free himself from traditional figurative art. He then discovered the work of Giuseppe Santomaso, and struck by its poetic quality and, above all, the “relationship with reality” in the artist’s work, he met him in Venice in 1976.

Following this meeting and subsequent regular encounters, Gorini’s creations took a decisive direction. He produced his first portfolio, Autoscienza-Presenza, featuring a text by the writer and friend Francesco Paciscopi.

He consolidated his “reality/nature” research during two journeys: one in Apulia with painter Alessandro Gamba, and the other in Greece. This was also the period of his first trip to Paris, where he settled in 1979.

He participated in several group exhibitions with a circle of Italian artists and became friends with Riccardo Licata, who had a studio at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and taught him mosaic, and Paolo Boni, painter and printmaker, uncle of Mario Boni, an intaglio printer, who introduced him to multicolor printmaking. He further explored printmaking techniques, drawn to the diverse approaches of the artists frequenting the Boni studio, notably Bertrand Dorny.

In 1980, he produced his second portfolio, Voyage sans monuments, accompanied by a text by Dino Carlesi (poet and art critic), followed by Terre dimenticate in 1984 and …ai segni della terra in 2002.

In 1981, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence in Gustavo Giulietti’s painting class.

For his printmaking work, he received the Bronze Medal of the “Ville de Paris” in 1982, the Silver Medal in 1984, and the Second Prize at the “Biennale du XV – Paris” in 2019. He is also a member of the artists’ group Manifestampe.
