Valérie Poli, a materialist painter trained in textile design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Arts in Paris, lives and works in the Paris region.
Valérie Poli, by Elsa Ballanfat, Professor of Philosophy, PhD, and Dancer:
Valérie Poli’s canvases reveal themselves through rhythm: each painting conveys the cadence of a fissure within its material, showing the eruption of verticality or color as if a moment detaches itself from a musical slowness.
The painting, traversed by fractures in its spatial rhythm, by voids and breaths through which each fragment of the canvas diffuses and contracts, ultimately seizes itself as a fraction of reality. It calls, beyond itself, for its imaginary and sensitive extension. The viewer perceives the space continuing, then returns to the canvas, plunging into its strokes as if into the spasms of a material that fragments and deepens infinitely.
Valérie Poli, by Véronique Perriol:
Valérie Poli’s art evokes and sensitively suggests maritime landscapes. It is a plunge into a space that gradually reveals itself through the careful layering of paints mixed with materials such as quartz and sand, which diffract the light. Blue, often indigo, dominates her work, forming a universe where water and sky merge in a passionate dialogue. This sensory ambiguity arises from reflections, occasionally disturbed by mist, creating an ephemeral atmosphere.
Her atmospheric painting, precise rather than vague, recalls the impressions of Turner with his London fogs—a notable reference considering the artist’s philosophical lineage linked to David Hume. Calm in some canvases gives way to sudden, explosive movement emerging from the pictorial space.
The artist speaks eloquently of this essential contrast in her work, where the spontaneity of creation reigns: “It is the alternation between calm and tumult, between intuition, letting go, and mastery, that guides me in constructing my canvases.” Valérie Poli enters into communion with the canvas, driven by an imaginary vision of a universe filled with sensations, emotions, and energy.
