La Montagne

Wood and gold mosaic sculpture
62 × 50 cm
Unique, signed artwork

Sœur Samuelle’s works combine wood, slate, and gold mosaics in an abstract language where each material interacts with the others. Drawing on her experience as a mosaicist and cabinetmaker, she allows the natural form of the wood to guide the creation, revealing a vibrant minimalism where light, texture, and spirituality unite in a harmonious inner landscape.

Sœur Samuelle
Sœur Samuelle

Sœur Samuelle was born on April 3, 1976. She studied cabinetmaking at the École Boulle before entering religious life; simultaneously, she continued working with wood in furniture restoration workshops.

In Rome, she discovered mosaics and trained in this art for ten years, participating in various projects, particularly in churches in France and abroad. Her style remained highly figurative for many years.

Returning to France in 2014, she chose a more hermitic life in the Diocese of Troyes while simultaneously opening herself to abstract art. Her mosaics began to incorporate natural materials such as wood, slate, and gold tesserae, reflecting a continuity with nature and her surroundings.

Around the same time, she discovered sculpture, applying her skills as a mosaicist and cabinetmaker. These sculptures embrace the unexpected and display a minimalism balanced by the presence and treatment of materials, notably gold leaf and agate, applied to wood that has been cut and dried over many months. Sœur Samuelle works with the natural form the wood takes during drying, enhancing it with gold and agate to elevate and transform the material.
