Catherine Cazau

Catherine Cazau was born in the Drôme, where she still lives and works today.

Catherine Cazau's watchwords are matter and color. These paintings are poetic, as they tend to explore human consciousness.

There's no need to look for meaning, or figurative subjects, other than spirituality.

Catherine Cazau, talking about her painting, says: "Informal stains, engraved lines, nervous gestures, (almost) illegible inscriptions. My painting is an emotional, energetic space, retaining an element of secrecy like an enigmatic poem that questions our perception of reality and the chaos of the world".

Poems, and more generally writing, accompany her works and are intimately linked to the artist's work. Catherine Cazau works on her paintings as writers work on their texts, retouching the material to modify its meaning.

Nevertheless, Catherine Cazau's work remains highly technical. According to Jean-Paul Gavart Perret, "The work becomes an original optical phenomenon. It often appears without us being able to isolate or identify its body, its substance, its texture. It reveals a reality prior to consciousness.

The artist plays with the volume of her canvases, exploring different media such as collage and prints. This brings her work to life. The eye wanders from top to bottom or left to right. Light takes on all its power, and plays with the works according to their exposure.
