Gysin Broukwen

Gysin Broukwen studied art history at the University of Nancy, and was particularly interested in the collages of Prévert, Ernst, Grosz and Schwitters, while specializing in the Suprematist and Constructivist movements of the early 20th century.

Gysin Broukwen's first creations were made during his travels in Australia and New Zealand. He began exhibiting in galleries in 1988. His artistic approach is rooted in contemporary iconography, from which he extracts fragments of images to create a new reality combining abstraction and instantaneous narration.

His works can be likened to "sculpture-paintings", which he presents in slight relief to accentuate volume. They are created through the construction-deconstruction of photographic material. A certain amount of chance is involved in assembling the images. In recent years, he has moved towards abstraction, focusing on perspective and volume to immerse the viewer in the subject matter.

Gysin Broukwen's works can be associated with the art of collage revisited. They are halfway between sculpture, relief painting and collage. For him, "Coll Art has the lightness of a feather and the permanence of eternity, it's an image sculpted on Chronos' habit. It generates a polysemy, blending abstraction and instantaneous narration. In recent years, I've been moving towards abstraction."

Gysin Broukwen has exhibited in numerous galleries in France and New York.
